In the morning of November 16, 2012, Professor Michael McGinn, Director of the Future Laboratory in School of Journalism of Missouri University and President of Information Science and Technology Committee, together with Ph.D. Zhang Yuyan, Director of China Cooperation Project of International Exchange Program, gave a lecture in School of Communication. Those guests attended the lecture included Tan Xingang, Secretary of Party Committee of Yunnan TV and Honorary President of School, Professor Xiong Yongxiang, Secretary of Party Committee of School, Professor Zou Jianda, Standing Deputy Dean, Professor Zhou Yun, Deputy Dean, teachers and students of School and colleagues from Yunnan TV. The lecture was presided by Professor Zou Jianda.
First of all, Dr. Zhang Yuyan made a speech titled Media Convergence---New Strategies in Journalism and New Tactics in Mass Communication Education in the United States. Applying different kinds of charts, he introduced in great detail the media convergence, involving its definition, emerging in news strategies, the Internet as its pioneer and main field, and new trends in its development, etc.
Then, Professor Michael McGinn gave a lecture titled News Teaching among Media convergence: the New Situation and Interdisciplinary Approach. He highlighted how to teach media convergence in Missouri School of Journalism and presented audience the application of the current media convergence technology. He added that currently it is the top priority to foster the talents who were in conformity with fast development of the new media technology and the high-tech.
At 2:00 PM, Professor Michael McGinn and Dr. Zhang Yuyan also made academic exchanges with the teachers and students in the meeting room. Professor Michael McGinn stressed that setting up the media convergence major mainly relied on teachers and professional equipment. For this major, teachers should master multimedia skills and technologies and had better carry out teaching demonstration in a multimedia laboratory. In the United States, graduates majoring in media convergence are easier to find jobs in more diversified fields than graduates of traditional media major. School of Journalism in Missouri University is willing to work with our School to set up media convergence major.
